The surprise line item
Cloud providers usually charge little or nothing for data coming in and a per-gigabyte fee for data going out. As hybrid applications, backups and analytics exports grow, egress can become one of the larger lines on the bill.
Know your flows
Use your cloud billing and flow logs to find which applications and destinations create the most outbound traffic. Often a few flows dominate.
How private connectivity fits
Many cloud providers apply different, often lower, data transfer rates to traffic leaving through their direct-connect services than to traffic leaving over the internet. Routing heavy hybrid flows over a private DC-to-Cloud connection can therefore reduce egress spend, in addition to improving performance. Check the current pricing for your provider and region.
Architectural fixes
- Keep chatty services in the same place.
- Cache or replicate frequently read data close to where it is consumed.
- Compress and batch large transfers.
Bring it together
The best results come from combining measurement, architecture and the right connectivity. Ask our engineers to review your hybrid traffic pattern.
