A natural division of labour
Edge sites are great for low-latency processing near users and devices. The cloud is great for storage, large-scale analytics and machine learning. Many architectures use both.
The connectivity gap
Edge sites often connect back to a central data center, which then connects to the cloud. That adds distance and a dependency on the central site.
Direct edge-to-cloud
On the Peer1IX fabric, an edge rack in an Edge Data Center or Micro PoP can connect directly to cloud on-ramps over private virtual circuits. Data reaches the cloud without a detour.
Keep traffic efficient
Process and filter at the edge. Send aggregated results, alerts and samples to the cloud, and keep raw streams local unless they are needed centrally.
Use cases
- Video analytics: detect events at the edge, store clips in the cloud.
- IoT telemetry: aggregate sensor data regionally, analyse nationally.
- Content platforms: edge caches filled from cloud origins.
