Latency-Sensitive Apps in a Hybrid World

Latency-Sensitive Apps in a Hybrid World

Splitting an application between data center and cloud can quietly add latency to every request. How to spot it and fix it.

The hidden cost of splitting

When part of an application moves to the cloud and part stays on-premises, calls that used to stay inside one data center now cross a network link. If a single user request triggers dozens of such calls in sequence, small delays add up to a slow experience.

Find the chatty paths

Use distributed tracing or application performance monitoring to see which requests cross the boundary and how many calls each makes.

Fixes that work

  • Co-locate chatty components in the same environment.
  • Batch calls instead of making many small requests.
  • Cache reference data close to where it is used.
  • Use asynchronous patterns where users do not need to wait.

The network’s role

A private DC-to-Cloud connection reduces latency variability compared with the internet, which improves worst-case response times — the ones users notice.

Don’t forget users

If users are spread across India, serving them from edge locations near them can matter more than shaving milliseconds between data center and cloud.
