Hub-and-Spoke Enterprise WAN on an Interconnection Fabric

Hub-and-Spoke Enterprise WAN on an Interconnection Fabric

Regional hubs on an interconnection fabric give enterprises a modern WAN: branches connect locally, and the fabric handles the rest.

The old model

Classic enterprise WANs backhauled every branch to a central data center over dedicated circuits. Today, much of the traffic goes to cloud and SaaS, so sending it all through headquarters adds distance and cost.

A fabric-based design

Instead, branches connect to the nearest Peer1IX location — an exchange, Micro PoP or Edge Data Center. Those locations act as regional hubs. The fabric connects hubs to each other, to data centers and to cloud on-ramps over private paths.

Branch connectivity options

  • A local access circuit into the hub.
  • Broadband or 5G with an SD-WAN overlay that terminates at the hub, using IPsec or a virtual SD-WAN gateway on Peer1ix Virtual Edge.

Security at the hub

Instead of a firewall in every branch, policy can be enforced centrally with Peer1ix FWaaS at the hub.

Benefits

  • Shorter paths to cloud and SaaS.
  • Fewer long-distance circuits.
  • Central policy and visibility.
  • Simple onboarding for new branches.
