Moving Data Between Clouds: Bandwidth, Cost and Security

Large data transfers between clouds raise three questions — how fast, how much and how safely. A practical checklist.

Three questions

Moving terabytes between cloud platforms — for analytics, migration or redundancy — forces you to think about speed, cost and security together.

Speed

Throughput over the internet varies with conditions. A private cloud-to-cloud path gives consistent capacity, so you can predict when a transfer will finish.

Cost

Cloud egress pricing varies by provider, region and path. Some providers price data leaving through direct-connect services differently from internet egress. Check current rates for your clouds before designing large flows.

Security

  • Encrypt data in transit, even on private paths.
  • Use dedicated credentials with minimal permissions for transfer jobs.
  • Log every transfer.

Integrity

Verify transfers with checksums. Large copies occasionally fail partway, and you need to know.

Scheduling

Run bulk transfers when other workloads are quiet, and throttle if needed to avoid affecting production traffic.
