Replacing Cross-Connect Sprawl With Virtual Circuits

Racks full of single-purpose cables are expensive and hard to manage. How virtual circuits consolidate connectivity and cut recurring costs.

How sprawl happens

A new SaaS provider, a payment partner, a backup vendor, a second cloud — each relationship often began with its own cross-connect. Years later, an audit shows dozens of links, many lightly used, each with its own monthly charge.

Audit your connections

List every physical cross-connect with its destination, capacity and typical utilisation. You will usually find a few heavily used links and a long tail of small ones.

Consolidate the long tail

Move the low-volume connections onto virtual circuits over a single Peer1IX port. Each partner still gets an isolated connection with defined bandwidth, but you maintain one physical link instead of many.

Keep dedicated links where they make sense

Very high-volume relationships may still justify their own port. The goal is the right mix, not dogma.

Plan the migration

  • Set up the virtual circuit in parallel with the existing link.
  • Move traffic during a maintenance window.
  • Decommission the old cross-connect once stable.

The result

Fewer cables, lower recurring costs, and the ability to add or change connections without new physical work. Talk to our team about a consolidation plan.
