Why redundancy matters
Cloud providers schedule maintenance on their edge devices. Fibre gets cut. Routers fail. If production depends on a single private connection, any of these events becomes an outage.
Level 1: Two connections
Use two private connections from different routers on your side, ideally to different devices on the provider side.
Level 2: Diverse paths
Make sure the two connections do not share fibre routes or building entries. Ask for path diversity information.
Level 3: Two locations
For the highest availability, connect at two different cloud on-ramp locations. This protects against problems affecting an entire site.
Routing
Run BGP over each connection and use routing policy to prefer one path or balance across both. Tune timers or use BFD so failover happens quickly.
Internet backup
A VPN over the internet can serve as a last-resort backup, with lower routing preference than the private links.
Test regularly
Disable one connection during a planned window and confirm traffic moves cleanly. Measure how long it takes.
