IPv4 and IPv6 Peering on the Same Port

IPv4 and IPv6 Peering on the Same Port

Peer1IX supports dual-stack peering from day one. Why you should set up IPv6 sessions alongside IPv4 — and how.

Why IPv6 peering matters

Major Indian mobile and broadband networks carry a substantial share of their traffic over IPv6, and large content platforms serve it natively. If you peer only over IPv4, IPv6 traffic takes another path — often transit.

What you get

Each member port receives both an IPv4 and an IPv6 address on the peering LAN.

Configure both

Set up BGP sessions over IPv6 to both route servers and to your IPv6 bilateral peers. Announce your IPv6 prefixes with matching route6 objects and ROAs.

Keep policies equivalent

Apply the same filtering principles — prefix filters, max-prefix, bogon filtering — to IPv6 as to IPv4.

Verify

After bringing sessions up, check how your IPv6 prefixes are seen using our looking glass.
