Building a Peering Policy for Your Network

A clear peering policy tells other networks how to peer with you. What to include and how open to be.

Why have a policy

Other networks want to know whether and how they can peer with you. A published policy saves time and sets expectations.

Choose a stance

  • Open: peer with anyone at common locations.
  • Selective: peer when certain criteria are met, such as traffic volume.
  • Restrictive: peer only in specific cases.

Most access networks benefit from an open policy at exchanges.

Typical requirements

  • A public ASN and a PeeringDB record.
  • Up-to-date IRR objects and ROAs.
  • A 24×7 NOC contact.
  • Support for IPv6.

Technical rules

State how you filter routes, max-prefix expectations, and whether you use route servers.

Where you peer

List exchange points and facilities, such as your Peer1IX locations.

Publish

Put the policy on your website and link it from PeeringDB.
