Virtual Cross Connects: Private Links at the Speed of Software

A virtual cross connect gives you a private point-to-point link to another network on Peer1IX — over the port you already have, with no new fibre.

The physical cross-connect

When two networks in a data center want a private link, they order a cross-connect: a cable run between their racks. It takes time to install, adds a monthly fee and only connects two points in the same building.

The virtual cross connect

A Virtual Cross Connect (VXC) creates a private layer-2 path between two Peer1IX ports. It runs as a VLAN over each party’s existing port, so no new cable is needed.

What it enables

  • Private peering with a large partner without a new physical port.
  • Connections to service providers in other facilities or cities.
  • Temporary links for projects or migrations.

Bandwidth and isolation

Each VXC has its own bandwidth limit and is visible only to the two connected parties.

When physical still makes sense

For very large, stable traffic between two networks in the same building, a dedicated physical link can still be the right choice. Many networks use both.
