IPsec Tunnels Explained: Secure Site-to-Site Connectivity

IPsec creates encrypted tunnels across untrusted networks. How it works and how managed termination on Peer1IX simplifies it.

What IPsec does

IPsec encrypts and authenticates IP traffic between two endpoints, creating a secure tunnel across an untrusted network like the internet.

How a tunnel forms

  1. IKE (Internet Key Exchange) — the endpoints authenticate each other and agree on keys. IKEv2 is the modern standard.
  2. IPsec Security Associations — traffic is encrypted and integrity-protected using the agreed algorithms.

Site-to-site use

A branch router establishes a tunnel to a hub. Traffic between branch and hub is protected regardless of the internet path in between.

Managed termination

Peer1IX IPsec Tunnel provides the hub end at our edge locations. Your sites connect to the nearest one, and the tunnel lands directly on your private network on the fabric — with access to data centers, clouds and services.

Where it fits

Remote sites, temporary locations, backup paths for private circuits and partner access.
