What an ASN is
An Autonomous System Number uniquely identifies a network that sets its own routing policy. When your network speaks BGP with others, it does so as an ASN.
Do you need one?
You need your own ASN if you want to connect to more than one upstream provider with your own routing policy, or to peer at an exchange like Peer1IX. If you have a single provider and no plans to multi-home, you may not.
Where Indian organisations apply
- APNIC, the Regional Internet Registry for the Asia-Pacific, through direct membership.
- IRINN, the Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers, operated as India’s National Internet Registry.
Each has its own membership and fee structure; check their current policies.
What you will typically need
- Organisation registration details.
- Contact persons for technical and abuse matters.
- A description of your multi-homing or peering plan.
After you get it
Create route objects, publish ROAs and register in PeeringDB. Then you are ready to peer.
Talk to us about peering once your ASN is assigned.
