Combining Peering and Cloud Interconnects on One Port

Your Peer1IX port can carry public peering, private links and cloud security interconnects together. How to organise it.

Consolidation

Many networks start with a Peer1IX port for peering, then add services over time. A cloud security interconnect is another VLAN on the same port.

Organising services

  • VLAN A: public peering.
  • VLAN B: Cloudflare Network Interconnect.
  • VLAN C: cloud on-ramp.
  • VLAN D: private link to a partner.

Capacity planning

Monitor utilisation per VLAN and for the whole port. When the total approaches capacity, upgrade the port or add a LAG member.

Routing

Keep routing policies clear for each service so traffic takes the intended path.

Benefits

One physical connection, many services, and a single provider relationship for the connectivity layer.
