Choosing Optics and Port Speeds for Your First Interconnect

Choosing Optics and Port Speeds for Your First Interconnect

Picking the right transceiver avoids delays on activation day. A guide to common optics and how to choose them.

Why optics matter

Many first-day activation delays are caused by mismatched optics. A few checks in advance save time.

Common choices

  • 1G: 1000BASE-LX over single-mode fibre for most cross-connects.
  • 10G: 10GBASE-LR (SFP+), the workhorse of interconnection.
  • 100G: 100GBASE-LR4 (QSFP28) for single-mode, longer reach.
  • 400G: 400GBASE-LR4 or FR4 (QSFP-DD/OSFP) at core sites.

Single-mode vs multi-mode

Most data center cross-connects use single-mode fibre. Confirm with the facility before ordering optics.

Reach

LR optics typically cover up to 10 km — more than enough for in-building connections. Longer transport links may need different optics.

Vendor coding

Some routers only accept optics coded for that vendor. Use compatible optics to avoid surprises.

Spares

Keep at least one spare of each optic type you use, at or near the site.
